Mayawati alliance move deals huge blow to opposition unity
Ahead of the assembly elections, BSP announced on Thursday, a tie-up with Congress rebel Ajit Jogi in Chattisgarh. This was a huge blow to the opposition unity Mayawati. This put a large pressure on the Congress to accept its terms in Madhya Pradesh unilaterally declaring a list of 22 candidates.
Mayawati said, during the announcement, that Jogi would be the alliance chief for the position of Chattisgarh Chief Minister. This development can act as a potential boost for BJP. That is due to the overlap between the new alliance and Congress’s support in a state where elections have run very close.
The BSP chief announced a list of 22 candidates for the post of MP. But unlike Chattisgarh, where Congress seems to reconcile going it alone, the main opposition is looking at the development as a bargaining ploy. The elections in Chattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and Mizoram are very important. Their outcome might set the stage for the main event.
Congress is continuously being pressed BSP for seats in the major BJP-ruled states. They have also hinted at shares in other states when the Lok Sabha elections are held.
Political circles believe that the twin announcements reflect Mayawati’s desire to drive a hard bargain for seats in the Lok Sabha and state polls.
BSP General Secretay in charge of Madhya Pradesh, Ramacha Rajbhar said that Mayawati has decided to field BSP candidates in all 230 assembly seats in the state.
